Direct Torque Control of an 8/6 Switched Reluctance Motor Using a Shared Switch Converter

Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) are widely recognized for their efficiency, robustness, and cost-effectiveness due to their simple construction and absence of permanent magnets. However, their application is often constrained by high torque ripple, which affects performance in various domains. To address this challenge, this study deals with only torque control of SRM via Direct Torque Control (DTC) implementation in an 8/6 SRM using a shared switch converter topology. Unlike conventional Asymmetric Half-Bridge (AHB) converters, the proposed design enables two phases of SRM to share a common switch, thereby reducing the number of switches required per phase and optimizing cost. Further, a suitable switching table is developed to support the proposed DTC. The study examines the impact of this configuration on torque performance, highlighting modifications necessary for voltage vector selection in the DTC strategy. Simulation and experimental validation confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in mitigating torque ripple while maintaining system reliability.
