Growth of Internet and Mobile Banking and Its Correlation with the Profitability of Banking Sector of Thailand

This study aims to explore the situation and trend of internet and mobile banking in Thailand and also investigate the correlation between internet and mobile banking and the profitability of banking sector of Thailand during the first quarter of 2010 and the second quarter of 2024. In addition, profitability in banking sector is measured by two financial ratios, including net profit margin and return on assets. The findings reveal that both internet and mobile banking have sharply grown since 2010. In 2023, there were 599.11 million transactions and 29.56 billion transactions via internet and mobile banking with the transaction value of 33.74 and 71.17 trillion baht, respectively. In addition, the average value per transaction via internet and mobile banking was 49.14 and 2.17 thousand baht during the first half of 2024, respectively. The findings also reveal that internet banking has the positive correlation with both net profit margin and return on assets while mobile banking has the negative correlation with them.
