Real-Time Alcohol Sensing and Ignition Control System for Enhanced Vehicle Safety

Drunk driving is a major cause of road accidents globally, resulting in thousands of deaths every year because of the absence of real-time intervention systems. This study solves this vital problem by creating a real-time alcohol detection and ignition control system to stop drunk drivers from driving. The system uses an MQ3 gas sensor, placed close to the steering wheel, to constantly check the driver’s breath. Combined with an Arduino Uno microcontroller, it shows alcohol readings on a 16x2 LCD and locks the engine through a relay when levels pass a 55-unit threshold, producing a buzzer for notification. Extensive testing under different alcohol concentrations and ambient conditions verified the accuracy and reliability of the system, achieving a consistent engine lock when alcohol is present. Compatible with smart key cars, this affordable solution is simple to install and records detection events for compliance. Preventing drunk driving, the system dramatically improves road safety, providing a scalable means of reducing alcohol-related accidents.
