Comparative Study of Prominent Carbon Materials for Capacity Improvement of Lead Acid Battery

Since its invention, the lead acid battery has dominated large-scale energy storage systems. In the context of environmental sustainability, lead-carbon batteries present an opportunity to minimize waste by extending battery life and enhancing recyclability, thus reducing the need for new raw materials. The development of commercially accessible lead-carbon battery products has advanced significantly. This presses for the need to investigate the possibility of creating a lead dioxide positive electrode that is corrosion-resistant, long-lasting, and durable with a suitable carbon based negative electrode. The improvement of energy storage systems efficiency and lifespan can help reduce environmental impact and facilitate the transition to cleaner energy. These batteries will get further life by use of battery management systems along with battery assembly. Carbon, nanostructures, and composite materials are frequently added to the negative plate of batteries to improve their life cycle and charge acceptance, especially under high-rate partial state conditions. Carbon particles distributed homogeneously over the surface of the negative plate act over the whole plate. This reduces corrosion of plate and hence reduces overall sulfation effect. Smaller the particles, the better the agglomeration which causes formation of protective layers over those plates. This increases the specific energy of the battery. To further enhance sustainability, there is a need to find better carbon for negative electrodes. Various carbon materials have been tried and the best combination with metal oxide is suggested.
