Performance Comparison of Induction Motors and IPMSMs With Identical Stators for Use as Auxiliary Motors in EVs and HEVs

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are working to reduce production costs by focusing on component commonality and standardization. One widely used approach to achieving component commonality in traction motors involves maintaining the core shape while varying the stack length. Another method involves using an identical stator assembly and pairing it with different types of rotors to produce various motor types, such as interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) and induction motors (IMs). This latter approach offers the advantage of achieving high component commonality while diversifying product costs and performance. This study experimentally compared the performances of an IM and an IPMSM designed for the auxiliary drive, with both using an identical stator. Under the same input power constraint, the idle losses, maximum output power, temperature influence, and efficiency of the two motors were compared, along with their energy consumption in the UDDS and HFEDS driving schedules. This study aims to provide insights into the advantages and disadvantages of the IPMSM and IM, which share an identical stator as auxiliary drive motors, serving as a reference for users to make informed choices based on their specific needs.
