Development of AC-AC Direct Matrix converter using Space Vector Modulation techniques

A fixed three-phase input supply can be directly converted into a variable voltage and frequency output using a matrix converter, a single-stage power conversion system. It is smaller and less expensive than traditional converters because it does not require an intermediary DC link. Nine bidirectional switches made of discrete IGBTs and fast diodes are used in the conversion process to enable the input supply to generate a three-phase output. Various pulse width modulation techniques supervise these switches’ gate signals. The gate pulses for the bidirectional switches in this study are produced using the Direct Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation technique. MATLAB-Simulink was used to simulate the matrix converter and analyze various output voltage and current characteristics. The output frequency could be changed according to user needs because the modulation index ranged from 0 to a maximum of 0.86. Fully controllable output voltage and frequency, the removal of energy storage components, improved durability, bidirectional power flow, high efficiency, limited switching losses, sinusoidal output with low harmonic distortion, four-quadrant operation, compact design, and cost-effectiveness are just a few benefits of this converter. Electric cars, submarines, pumps, fans, paper and textile mills, microgrids, wind energy conversion systems, and AC motor speed control are just a small number of industries that use direct matrix converters. To guarantee the dependable operation of the matrix converter, the project entails designing a gate driver circuit, putting protection against overvoltage and short circuits into place, and creating a commutation strategy.
