A Metaheuristic Knapsack Approach for Edge Server Assignment in 5G Networks with Diverse Edge Measurements

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionised real time responsiveness of massive devices over the Internet, which in turn involves use of cloud edge/fog ensembles for computing. Placement of electronic systems (ES) inside information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures is a key factor to quality-of-service standards not only for Beyond 5G communication, but also in general in the telecom field. On the other hand, we show that the ESPP is NP hard because of the large number of BSs and ESs as well as the introduction of placement variations. In this study, Particle Swarm Optimisation is employed for addressing the ESPP. The idea behind this optimisation technique is to start with a particle initialisation of BS placements inside the geography, then to scan this through possible sets of BSs as an encoded sequence. The scheme WTASE (Workload-Threshold Aware Sequence Encoding) provides both the number of ESs and their exact positions without the need for the storage of a huge distance matrix. Simulations are tested to show that the method improves utilisation rate, workload balance and average energy consumption of the ESs.
