Development of a Low-Cost Biomechanical Hand Prosthesis Prototype

Human hands perform essential functions, and their loss imposes professional and psychological challenges. Assistive technologies, such as prostheses, offer solutions to improve the quality of life. This article develops a low-cost biomechanical hand prosthesis with efficient mechanisms, ergonomics similar to the human hand, and control via simplified electromyographic signals. The prototype achieved an 80% success rate in object grasping and 73.3% in EMG control, with a response time of 313 ms. Ultimately, an innovative and efficient prosthesis was developed, based on the LARM industrial model, featuring six degrees of freedom, dimensions similar to a human hand, and reduced cost.
