Designing an IGBT-Based Active Front-End Rectifier with Voltage Oriented-based Control for Power-to-Hydrogen Electrolyzers

IGBT-based active front-end rectifiers offer several advantages over traditional rectifiers, representing a notable progression in power conversion technology. Their ability to actively manipulate the input current waveform enhances power quality by mitigating harmonic distortion and voltage fluctuations, thereby improving overall system efficiency and reliability. These features are particularly beneficial for ensuring adherence to stringent power quality standards and fostering stable and reliable operation. Additionally, the modular design and advanced control capabilities of the IGBT-based active front-end power converter facilitate seamless integration into complex energy systems, providing flexibility and adaptability across various applications. This paper investigates the effectiveness of IGBT-based active front-end rectifiers in addressing power quality concerns and meeting the load requirements of power-to-hydrogen electrolyzers compared to conventional AC/DC converters within a real Power-to-X (PtX) plant in Aarhus Denmark. Employing Voltage Oriented- based Control, these rectifiers aim to optimize power conversion efficiency and reduce Total Harmonic Distortion of current levels to comply with grid codes while also minimizing undesired voltage ripple to the electrolysis stack. Through comprehensive simulations encompassing diverse operational scenarios, the research evaluates the rectifier’s performance, offering valuable insights into its potential impact and effectiveness in practical applications.
