A Quantum-Inspired Method for Optimal Placement of Power Quality Monitors Considering System Uncertainties

This paper proposes a new technique to optimally allocate the power quality monitors (PQMs) for observing the voltage related power quality issues. The proposed approach utilizes a quantum computing technique to reduce the power quality monitoring costs. It develops strategies for PQMs placement based on Ising model. It optimizes the number and location of PQMs making sure either the bus itself or the neighbor buses are equipped with a PQM. The approach is validated on sample IEEE test networks, demonstrating that the power quality issues are monitored with fewer PQMs. The proposed approach is generic and applicable to networks with uncertainties, addressing the drawback of existing methods in literature. As such, the detection and mitigation of power quality issues are improved resulting in more reliable and stable power systems.
