Energy Stress on Surge Protective Devices Installed in DC Charging Stations due to Negative Lightning Strikes on Light Pole

This study evaluates the overvoltages stressing the charging station equipment and the interconnected electric vehicles, as well as the surge currents conducted through the surge protective devices (SPDs) in DC charging stations, with the aid of ATP-EMTP simulations for direct lightning strikes to a light pole located within the charging station infrastructure. The analysis considers lightning peak current and soil resistivity as key influencing parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed surge protection scheme is assessed in terms of overvoltage mitigation and energy stress on SPDs. Required impulse current ratings for SPDs are provided for optimizing surge protection in DC charging stations. The findings provide practical guidance for enhancing lightning protection performance in EV charging networks.
