Reduction of the Cardboard Effect by Motion Parallax and Its Relationship to Shooting Conditions

We showed that adding motion parallax to binocular disparity is effective in reducing the cardboard effect in stereoscopic displays at various shooting conditions, and clarified appropriate way to provide motion parallax. The cardboard effect refers to a perceptual phenomenon in which the depth of an image consisting of a foreground object and a background scene is perceived, but the thickness of the foreground object itself is underestimated in stereoscopic displays. This is caused by the mismatch between the shooting distance and the viewing distance. In this study, we examined whether motion parallax can reduce this cardboard effect by changing parameters such as the shooting distance and position of camera’s gazing point.
