Investigation of the Influence of Rotational Motion on the Penetration Performance of Shaped Charge Using Ansys Autodyn Software

The penetration performance of shaped-charge warheads is influenced by various factors such as explosive type, liner material, wave shaper, stand-off distance, and spin rate of the projectile. Among these, the effect of spin rate on the penetration performance has not been extensively studied. In this paper, the authors employed the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method in Ansys Autodyn to investigate the influence of spin rate on the penetration capability of shaped-charge warheads. Numerical simulations were conducted using a 40 mm projectile model. The results show that as the spin rate increases, the jet diameter tends to increase, while the penetration depth tends to decrease. For simulations of free-flight warheads (without targets), compared to nonrotating projectiles, the jet diameters of spinning projectiles with rotational speeds of $4000 \mathrm{rpm}, 6000 \mathrm{rpm}, 8000 \mathrm{rpm}$, and $10,000 \mathrm{rpm}$ increased by $37 \%, 89 \%, 175 \%$, and $198 \%$, respectively. For simulations with target penetration, compared to non-rotating projectiles, the penetration depths of spinning projectiles at the same rotational speeds decreased by $\mathbf{5 \%}, \mathbf{1 0 \%}, \mathbf{1 9 \%}$, and $\mathbf{3 0 \%}$, respectively.
