Experimental Setup for Evaluation of Touch Accuracy and Reaction Time in Military Aviation Environment

The integration of touchscreen technology in military aviation is a significant step towards modernizing cockpit interfaces, enhancing pilot efficiency, and reducing cognitive workload. This study verifies the suitability of the designed layout for evaluating reaction time and touch accuracy in static and dynamic environments. While effective, traditional HandsOn Throttle-And-Stick (HOTAS) controls have limitations in accommodating the increasing complexity of modern avionics. Touchscreens offer flexibility, ergonomic advantages, and a dynamic interface adaptable to missionspecific requirements. The experimental setup involves a Gyroscope simulator that replicates angular accelerations experienced in flight. Ten participants (8 males and 2 females) performed touch-based tasks using a Lenovo tablet, both in static and dynamic conditions. Reaction time and accuracy were measured using a custombuilt Android application. Results showed that angular motion significantly affected both reaction time and touch accuracy, decreasing in precision from 98% (static) to 91.5% (dynamic). Statistical analyses confirmed the significance of these differences. While touchscreens provide benefits such as reduced cockpit clutter and improved customization, challenges remain, including lack of tactile feedback. Future research should explore haptic feedback, eye-tracking, and gesture-based controls to enhance touchscreen usability in high-stress aviation environments. This study demonstrates the viability of touch interfaces in military aviation and provides a framework for evaluating future technological advancements.
