AI-Enhanced Smart Waste Management Employing IoT, GPS, and GSM Technologies for Improved Efficiency

As urban populations grow, the volume of waste generated increases, posing significant challenges for traditional waste management systems. Innovative waste management systems powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer a solution by optimizing waste collection routes, reducing operational costs, and minimizing environmental impact. These systems ensure efficient sorting and timely collection, preventing overflow and reducing pollution. This paper explores the integration of AI in waste management systems, with a specific focus on waste sorting processes. The newly developed waste management system demonstrates the concurrent detection of multiple municipal wastes (glass, plastic, and metal) simultaneously to open the appropriate bin’s lid, marked by a precision metric expressed as an accuracy percentage. A key innovation lies in integrating Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GMS) modules, providing precise geolocation data for monitored bins. Ultrasonic sensors further strengthen the system, dynamically assessing bin-filling progress. These findings contribute to a more nuanced and informative waste management approach. The developed system conserves resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and improves public health and safety. In smart cities, where sustainability and efficiency are paramount, AI-enhanced waste management systems are crucial in creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban environments.
