Preventing Neuron Atrophy using Brain Photobiomodulation Therapy at 810 nm: Prototype and Laser Fluence Rate Simulation

People with neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease face communication difficulties, making everyday life challenging. These neural disorders cause neuron shrinkage, which diminishes the transmission of brain signals. Photo biomodulation (PBM) therapy has been introduced as a treatment for many neurological conditions using low-level laser therapy. Near-infrared light enhances blood flow in the brain and helps repair neuron damage. This research represents a prototype designed to prevent brain neural damage. The device employs four adjustable light sources (Wavelength: 810 nm, Power: 20 mW) placed over the head. Light distribution within the head layers was simulated using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The simulation results show the temperature distribution across the layers of the human head model after applying Pennes’ bioheat equation. The experiment was conducted at 10,20, and 30 intervals, comparing continuous wave (CW) and pulsed wave (PW) laser modes. The pulsed mode showed greater penetration than the continuous mode, but the temperature remained steady throughout the experiments.
