Improving Torque Density through Leakage Reduction in IPM Machines for High Performance Applications

In this research, a low leakage high torque density corner bridgeless Interior Permanent Magnet (CB-IPM) Machine is presented. The proposed machine is package constrained and optimized using global response surface method to meet a given torque/speed, ripple, and magnet volume requirements. The EM performance of the proposed machine is compared with an equivalent conventional Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) machine. It is presented that the proposed machine improves the torque density over 6% while meeting the ripple and magnet volume requirements through leakage reduction. The stress analysis of the corner bridgeless rotor is presented to show the structural integrity of the motor.
