High-Precision Characterization and Bias Control of Parallel Mach-Zehnder Modulators Using Optical Spectrum Analysis

Optical modulators consisting of parallel Mach-Zehnder interferometers can generate complicated signals with precise bias control. A characterization method of such devices using optical spectrum analysis was reviewed, experimentally demonstrated and used in combination with a novel bias control technique to obtain high extinction ratio and optical two-tone signals.
