Youtube's Role in Motivating Students and Developing Interpersonal Skills for Formative Assessment in Higher Education

This study aims to explore the motivation and interpersonal skills of students of higher learning institutions towards using YouTube in making group work presentations for formative assessment. This quantitative study involved 211 students who actively used the YouTube platform to present their coursework. They followed the General Studies Subject at the General Studies Department, Sunway College Kuala Lumpur, from January to July 2024. A total of 26 questionnaires using Google Forms were distributed and 68 % of the 310 respondents provided well-completed responses. The questionnaire comprised three sections: student demographics, student motivation for using YouTube as a presentation tool, and interpersonal skills developed through this activity. The study results showed that the level of student motivation in using YouTube as a presentation medium was moderate to high, with three out of nine items recording high mean scores. In addition, all interpersonal skills items recorded high mean scores, indicating increased collaboration, communication, and technical skills. This increase also reflects the positive effects of using YouTube among students, which at the same time has a good impact on group formative assessment and increases students' engagement and cognitive and collaborative skills.
