Quantitative Resilience Assessment of Power System in the Presence of Energy Storage

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe, creating significant challenges to the resilience of power grids. The integration of renewable energy sources (RES), deployment of energy storage systems (ESS), and the utilization of microgrids are considered emerging solutions for enhancing modern power grid resilience. This paper explores the role of ESS and RES in supporting grid restoration and resilience during extreme weather events. By examining critical aspects such as load recovery, support for essential infrastructure, and recovery speed, this study provides insights into how ESS and RES contribute to operational efficiency and grid stability. A detailed resilience assessment methodology is presented and validated using a microgrid adapted from the IEEE-69 bus test system, highlighting the potential of ESS and RES to strengthen grid resilience.
