Analytical Model for Temperature Variations at Medium-Voltage Cables' Layers

Power cable network has been widely used as an effective transmission line. Controlling the cable insulation's temperature reduce rapid ageing and emergencies, which in turn lead to improve power cable utilization. This paper presents an analytical model for temperature distributions in power cable system. To this end, a detailed model for the calculation of heat transfer phenomenon by IEC60287 is presented. The formula considers the ladder-type thermal equivalent circuit by simulating heat flow with a current in the electric analogy, the numerous node voltages conveniently model the temperatures. Therefore, a Julia code is written for solving the heat conduction equation and to determine the temperature distribution within the medium- voltage cables with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. With the experimental results, a proposed model was validated to compute the temperature distributions in cable layers. However, a comparison was made between the maximum temperature results obtained from IEC 60287, experimental test and those obtained from the simulated model. Consequently, the comparison of the simulation results with the experimental results demonstrates almost a good match.
