Study on the Enhancement of New Energy Absorption Capacity by Pumped-Storage Hydroelectricity

In the domain of multi-energy complementary systems, the output characteristics of wind power, photovoltaic power generation, and hydroelectric power generation exhibit inherent randomness and volatility. The integration of these renewable energy sources on a large scale into the power grid introduces notable challenges due to their associated uncertainties. Pumped storage power stations emerge as a crucial solution, fulfilling the requirement for extensive energy storage and providing flexible power supply capabilities, thereby facilitating the increased utilization of renewable energy. This study delves into a pumped storage power station featuring a drainage basin layout. We undertook predictions for the 8760-hour output of wind and photovoltaic power in a northwestern region of China. To streamline the complexity of the output scenarios for these renewable energy sources, we utilized the K-Means++ algorithm for effective reduction. Additionally, we formulated a capacity optimization model for the integrated wind-water storage system, leveraging the NSGA-II algorithm. Through comparative analysis of output stability and the proportion of renewable energy installed capacity in the configuration results, we evaluated the carrying capacity of the pumped storage power station based on the optimal installation configuration. Our findings indicate that a configuration with a 1200 MW installed capacity for pumped storage, a 1000 MW installed capacity for hydropower, approximately 3178 MW for photovoltaic power, and approximately 1813 MW for wind power not only maintains a balanced proportion of renewable energy installed capacity but also minimizes output fluctuations.
