Simulation of the Drying Process of the Catalyst Layer in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC)

The drying process of catalyst layers in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) represents a critical stage in the manufacturing process, with a direct impact on the performance and durability of the fuel cell. The research aims to optimize the drying process by analyzing the factors that influence the drying kinetics. A two-dimensional, transient, two-phase drying model was established in COMSOL to simulate the moisture content variations within the catalyst layer during drying. Critical physical parameters of the ink and the drying process were identified, and the optimal parameter range was obtained. The study provides a framework for optimizing the ink compositions and drying process and offers an approach to enhance the efficiency for mass-scale production of a PEMFC.
