Adaptive Differential Evolution-Based Equalizer for Next-Gen Wireless Channels

Channel Equalization is an imperative process in digital communication system to decrease the impact of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and additional distortions for transmitting signals. The interference between symbols poses a significant obstacle to achieving dependable and error-free communication. To combat the ISI and noisy channel effects and to ensure better communication specific measures and effective strategies must be implemented like an adaptive equalizer being used at the receiver end. This article proposes a special type of Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm or simply an Adaptive DE (ADE) based approach in adjusting the weights taken for equalizing the original transmitted signal with the distorted signal. The scaling factor serves a crucial function in the DE algorithm which gives us effective results using covariance. The covariance of the error generated in every iteration of conventional DE has been discussed to update the scaling parameter of the DE which better tackles the non-linearity, fading and other noise effects present in the wireless channel thereby proving itself as a better channel equalizer than conventional DE. The performance of DE and ADE based channel equalization techniques have been presented in this paper in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) which proves the efficacy of the proposed approach.
