Design and Implementation of FPGA-Based System for Angle Estimation Using FMCW Radar

This paper presents the design and implementation of a hardware system for real-time angle estimation using Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar signals. The proposed system utilizes phase difference analysis to estimate the angle of an object by processing radar signals from multiple antennas. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is employed for efficient signal processing, enabling accurate phase-based angle estimation based on phase differences of the signal at four spatially separated receivers, using COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) algorithm. The final system prototype integrates a commercial FMCW radar module with an FPGA to demonstrate the feasibility of the design. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in angle estimation with mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.568.The proposed system is suitable for applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for lane change assistance, obstacle avoidance, and real-time object tracking in surveillance and robotics
