Acoustic Performance of Thin-Shell Concrete Domes and Wood-Framed, Modular Structures

As urban noise pollution increases, effective sound insulation in residential buildings is essential for occupant well-being. This study evaluates the acoustical performance of typical wood-framed, modular wood-framed, and thin-shell concrete dome structures using ASTM standards for the sound transmission class (STC) and outdoor-indoor transmission class (OITC). Experimental results indicate that thin-shell concrete domes achieve superior noise attenuation, outperforming both wood-framed and modular structures. While modular construction improves insulation, it still requires refinement. These findings underscore the impact of material selection and construction methods on acoustic performance, contributing to the advancement of sustainable and acoustically optimized residential design.
