Multi-Parameter Detection Based on U-Shaped Biomimetic Optical Fiber Sensor

Flow velocity, direction, and salinity are essential parameters for underwater environmental monitoring. However, current methods face significant challenges in achieving simultaneous multi-parameter detection. Inspired by the lateral line system of fish, we propose a biomimetic U-shaped plastic optical fiber sensor based on a ciliary cantilever beam structure for multi-parameter sensing. The sensor detects flow velocity and orthogonal directions with high precision by altering the light beam's direction in response to ciliary deformation. The evanescent wave from the U-shaped plastic optical fiber interacts with the surrounding water, enabling sensitive salinity measurements through changes in refractive index. Velocity sensitivity of 78.08 mV/(m/s) and resolution of 0.0128 m/s were achieved without the need for complex optical modules, enhancing the compactness of the sensor. With advantages such as low cost, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and corrosion resistance, this sensor is well-suited for monitoring in complex marine environments, providing an efficient solution for multi-parameter detection.
