A survey of ML Resources for IEC 61850 in Power Grid Security

IT-centric security solutions are inadequate against rising cyberattack threats against Operational Technology (OT) network. Therefore OT networks, for example power grid demand bespoke defenses. This has accelerated OT security research using advanced techniques & algorithms for mitigating OT security challenges. Machine Learning transcends traditional rule-based firewall by uncovering hidden patterns and complex dependencies, driving innovative solutions for grid resilience. This paper discusses challenges involved in using ML approach for smart-grid security solutions and provides a comprehensive survey of IEC-61850 resources for intrusion detection system (IDS). Most important challenge faced by cybersecurity researchers is finding suitable datasets & tools for training. Furthermore, it reviews ML-based IDS solutions recently reported in the literature.
