CLOUDS: Seamless Mood Tracking on the Wrist

Mood stability is an important aspect of mental health, and mood tracking is essential for understanding one’s mood patterns and identifying triggers for mood swings. This work-in-progress study presents the design and prototype of CLOUDS, a standalone smartwatch app for seamless mood tracking on Wear OS compatible smartwatches. Unlike traditional mobile Health (mHealth) mood tracking apps, CLOUDS allows users to conveniently log their moods directly on the wrist without the need for a companion smartphone app. Grounded in nudge theory, CLOUDS features color-coded mood clouds for easy selection, a circular slider for rating mood intensity, and integration with the ChatGPT API to generate personalized narratives based on logged mood data, heart rate, and contextual information. In addition, CLOUDS uses a wandering cloud on the watch face to unobtrusively remind users to log their mood. CLOUDS exemplifies the feasibility of transitioning from handheld devices to wrist-worn wearables for frictionless self-tracking.
