Research on Spatial Characteristics of Linear Metallic Particles Motion

Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) offer advantages such as high transmission capacity, compact footprint, and low transmission losses, gradually replacing overhead lines and cables in engineering applications. However, metal debris generated during GIS transportation, assembly, and operation may undergo electric field-induced lift-off and movement as metallic particles, significantly compromising the insulation performance. To enhance particle capture efficiency, it is essential to understand the spatial distribution characteristics of metal particle trajectories within GIS. This study conducted experiments using a coaxial electrode GIS chamber with insulators, observing the movement of linear metallic particles through high-speed camera imaging. Visual analysis and recognition techniques were employed to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of particle trajectories under different release positions and voltage polarities. The results reveal that the motion range of the metal particle is mainly concentrated in the lower part of the cavity and on the upper side of the guide bar. The spatial distribution characteristics of the motion trajectories obtained by the linear metallic particle at different release positions have similar law. Under negative polarity voltage, their trajectories are mainly focused on the lower side of the conductor rod. The findings provide references for contamination control strategies targeting linear metallic particles in GIS systems.
