The Literary Cyborg: Exploring Human-Machine Relationships in Literature

The cyborg‖the meld of the human and the machine has for decades haunted writers‘ imaginations, a fertile ground from which to interrogate ever-changing ideas of identity, consciousness and embodiment. This paper explores the implications of cyborg representations on literature as its collision with the human condition. Cyborgs in literature are more than involuntary representations of our potential futures just so someone can type up a story, they are lenses used to examine our cultural anxieties, hopes and ethical quandaries as we move into a more technological age. The literary cyborg has evolved quite a bit since Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, upending binary distinctions between the human and the machine, the organic and the artificial, the self and the other, circa industrial or digital dystopias and cyberpunk narratives. This is the same period when cybernetic theory emerged, in the mid-20th century, and posthumanist discourse gained traction and shaped the content and interpretation of cyborgs in literary studies. Figures like Philip K. Dick, William Gibson and Octavia Butler deploy the cyborg, at least in part, to speculate on emerging technologies but also to probe profoundly human questions — memory, agency, gender, race, mortality. If they do at all, these narratives argue against the idea of the cyborg as only a scientific phenomenon or an organic thing; they seem to show them as the products of socio-political systems, corporate interests and cultural demands. It is thus primarily that the literary cyborg is a robust means with which to interrogate power structures and identity politics. Donna Haraway's landmark ―Cyborg Manifesto‖ lies at the heart of this exploration, which reconfigures the cyborg as a hybrid whose gender and species buck conventional assumptions. Many authors today use cyborgs to challenge patriarchal and anthropocentric worldviews, reflecting the legacy of Haraway's writing. Feminist science fiction, for example, has employed the cyborg to suggest vectors for being beyond dualisms and towards multiplicity (Haraway, 1991 Haraway, 1993).
