Performance Evaluation of PID, LQR, and SMC for DC-DC Buck Converters Under Multiple Disturbances and Uncertainties

Over the past decades, control methods for DC-DC power converters have undergone continuous advancements. These methods can generally be categorized into linear and nonlinear approaches, with ongoing developments enhancing their efficiency, robustness, and adaptability to various applications. This work proposed a comparative synthesis between linear and nonlinear controllers such as PID, LQR, and SMC implemented for a DC-DC buck converter developed in MATLAB Simulink environment while considering different application \scenarios, e.g., load variations, input voltage fluctuations, noisy environment, and circuit parameter uncertainties. The simulation results indicate that the non-linear technique SMC responds effectively and provides more robustness under different operating conditions compared to classical and optimal controls (PID and LQR).
