Learning by Doing: Empowering the Next Generation of Optoelectronic Scientists and Engineers through Hands-On Frontier Optics Courses

Conventional undergraduate optics curricula often emphasize foundational theoretical courses and classical laboratory experiments, providing limited exposure to cutting-edge technologies and emerging applications. As a result, students frequently struggle to connect classroom-taught knowledge with practical, real-world applications, and may find it challenging to understand how fundamental optical principles are applied to solving advanced technological challenges.This work presents our recent initiative to reform the undergraduate program by introducing the Hands-On Frontier Optics Course Series. The objectives of this initiative are threefold: (i) to help students understand and engage with cutting-edge technologies and state-of-the-art developments; (ii) to promote personalized academic and professional growth; and (iii) to bridge the gap between undergraduate education and graduate research. Over the past two years, we have developed a comprehensive series of 27 courses covering a wide range of emerging topics in optoelectronics. To date, nearly 500 undergraduate students have enrolled, and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.The Hands-on Frontier Optics Course Series has proven to be an effective way to enrich students’ learning experiences, foster innovation, and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Ultimately, it is empowering the next generation of optoelectronic scientists and engineers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle future technological challenges.
