Modular High-voltage Pulse Generator based on Flying Capacitor Submodules

This paper presents a high-voltage pulse generator (HVPG) for water treatment, employing a modular converter structure based on floating capacitors. The pulse generator consists of fully modular submodules connected in series, each comprising a half-bridge, a capacitor, an inductor, and interconnecting diodes. The proposed converter does not require highvoltage switches and ensures a rapid dynamic response in the output voltage due to the absence of inductance in the output path. A modulation to generate the output voltage and charge the capacitors is also proposed. The proposed HVPG converter offers flexibility, enabling configurable amplitude and duration of the high-voltage pulse. The HVPG converter topology and the modulation technique are introduced, analyzed, and validated through simulation results using a 24 -submodule converter.
