Model Predictive Control Method for Vehicle-to-Grid and Grid-to-Vehicle Systems

In this paper, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy is proposed for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Grid-toVehicle (G2V) systems that incorporate bidirectional power converters. A single-phase H-bridge converter is used on the grid side of the system. The H-bridge converter operates as a rectifier in G2V while operating in inverter mode in the V2G. However, the single-phase H-bridge rectifier’s output voltage (DC-link voltage) includes double-line-frequency ripples. Therefore, a bidirectional DC-DC converter is located between the H-bridge and the battery. Thus, a suitable power electronics structure for V2G and G2V is achieved. Two independent MPC techniques control these two power converters. Also, the inverter’s current reference is generated by a PI controller that works based on the DC-link voltage error. Thus, the control strategy for the G2V and V2G systems is achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed system is investigated through simulation studies conducted in MATLAB/Simulink. The results obtained under steady-state conditions and during the transitions between V2G and G2V show that the battery and grid-side currents are controlled successfully. In addition, the grid current is in phase with the grid voltage with low Total Harmonic Distortions (THDs).
