Visual Enhancement of Ancient Documents using Thresholding Approaches

Preservation of ancient documents through digital scanning has become increasingly common. However, due to degradation and low contrast, many historical documents remain challenging to read. Consequently, enhancing such documents has become a pressing area of research. Document degradation often results from issues such as ink bleeding, text smearing, and other factors. Thresholding approaches offer an effective means to enhance the readability and quality of these documents. This paper highlights various types of degradation challenges and reviews progressive thresholding techniques for improving ancient manuscripts. Furthermore, we assess the efficiency of recent methodologies, identifying opportunities for developing advanced methods capable of addressing diverse degradation issues with greater efficiency.
