System Protection Hoisting Quayside Container Crane Using IoT Based Brake Resistor Stability

Crane is equipment used to transfer container or general cargo from ship to shore. An engine generator is used as the main power supply on the crane. A large amount of power is required when lifting. However, when the crane is hoisting down a brake resistor with a large capacity is needed to dissipate the power in the form of heat generated from the downward movement when crane operated. The risk of brake resistor performance failure can occur when the crane moves down with a large load, which will cause reverse power that can damage the engine generator. The performance of the brake resistor is tested in several experiments based on data from crane monitoring system and additional sensor temperature and vibration on motor. The research results show that temperatures above 148°C have a strong correlation with failure risk. A prediction model with decision tree and random forest is developed and result in prediction accuracy of 83.3%. With the implementation of this monitoring system, predictive maintenance can be carried out to prevent downtime and improve crane operational efficiency.
