DST: GPS Tracker for Outdoor Activities of Children with Down Syndrome Based on Internet of Things

In Indonesia, communities such as Persatuan Orang Tua Anak dengan Down Syndrome (POTADS) play an essential role in assisting people with down syndrome. According to parents at POTADS, children with down syndrome frequently get lost if they are not supervised. Therefore, this research was conducted to monitor children with down syndrome if they are not under the supervision of their parents. This research created an innovative GPS tracker integrated with a mobile phone that uses MQTT as a data transmission protocol. MQTT has real-time characteristics so that parents can monitor their children regularly. The GPS tracker is placed on the vest, the color and material of the vest are designed and adjusted to the preferences and comfort of children with down syndrome. Experimental results show that the device’s accuracy for outdoor use reaches an average of 4.33 meters and 8.36 meters for semi-outdoor use. The battery life of the GPS tracker for outdoor use lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes and for semi-outdoor use lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. For memory usage limit on mobile application is 128,6 MB and the execution time of the tracking feature is below 3,133 ms.
