Community-Driven Habit Formation: The Role of Social Dynamics in Gamification

Gamification is commonly applied in habit-tracking apps to promote behavior change, but elements such as streaks, rewards, and leaderboards do not necessarily contribute to long-term motivation. Users lose interest when gamification aspects become monotonous, causing abandonment of habits. This research highlights major challenges in current solutions, such as waning motivation, absence of social support, static gamification, strict recommendations, and high drop-off rates. To meet these challenges, this study aims to suggest social accountability and adaptive gamification, working in accordance with behavioral psychology concepts of relatedness (social connection) and competence (feeling of accomplishment). Research indicates that extrinsic motivators (e.g., rewards) are effective in the short term, whereas intrinsic motivators (e.g., personalization and social accountability) are vital for long-term habit formation. Nonetheless, the majority of apps do not support adaptive social involvement and AI-based personalization, leaving an opportunity for habit-forming approaches. This research suggests a peer-based habit tracker combining AI-empowered personalization and social cooperation. The platform dynamically adapts habit suggestions and task complexity alongside promoting peer accountability and group challenges. The proposed research will conduct a 12-week user test among 200 participants with assessments on habit completion rates, user satisfaction, social interaction, and retention. By integrating adaptive gamification with substantive social interaction, this research is expected to promote habit retention and motivation and deliver a sustainable means for long-term behavioral change.
