Silicon Field Emitter Arrays Modeling Using 3-D Monte Carlo Simulations

This study presents a comprehensive 3-D Monte Carlo simulation of silicon field emitter arrays (FEAs) to investigate the “screening effect” that is a critical factor in optimizing emission uniformity and current density. While traditional methods often oversimplify the complex interactions within FEAs by neglecting carrier density variation and space charge effects, our Monte Carlo approach provides a more accurate and detailed understanding of how external electrostatic fields affect the movement of carriers and the distribution of charges within the emitters. We explore the impact of emitter geometry, doping concentration, and array pitch on the screening effect, with a particular focus on edge screening reduction and scaling effects. Our simulations reveal that emitters at the edges of arrays experience reduced screening, leading to higher emission currents, while scaling the array size influences current uniformity and total emission. Validation against experimental data shows consistency in predicting turn-on voltage, though some discrepancies in emission current scaling at higher voltages suggest that further refinement is needed. These findings enhance the design of more efficient and reliable silicon FEAs, with significant implications for their practical applications.
