Project-Based Learning Center to Build Skills in Creative Problem Solving in Engineering Education

Engineering students must be equipped to navigate a dynamic profession that demands technical expertise and interpersonal skills. Modern engineers face challenges such as competing priorities from clients, regulators, environmental groups, and the public. Among these, creative problem-solving has become increasingly vital. Global research underscores the need for creativity in engineering education to address 21st-century challenges, emphasizing innovative problem-solving and adaptability. Methods like project-based learning (PBL), interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world applications have proven effective in fostering creativity. The Concept Center at Weber State University exemplifies the PBL model, connecting student interns with sponsored projects to develop creative problem-solving skills. By bridging academia and industry, this approach provides hands-on experience with practical challenges. This paper presents case studies from the Concept Center, showcasing how PBL prepares students for engineering success in a rapidly evolving world.
