How can we Foster a Love for Learning? Case Study on Enhancing Knowledge for Educators and Students at Chulalongkorn University

In 2023, Chulalongkorn University, located in Bangkok, Thailand, adopted the edX online learning platform as a key initiative to promote lifelong learning and address workforce-relevant skill development. Replacing its previous Coursera subscription, limited to the Faculty of Engineering and General Education Center, the university expanded access to all participants, including students, instructors, and staff. The project, led by the Chulalongkorn Learning Innovation Center, supports teaching and learning through curated tools and resources. The edX platform has engaged 1,661 participantscomprising 1,470 students, 107 instructors, and 84 staff members-by offering flexible credit-based and open learning formats. This approach has increased engagement and satisfaction, allowing users to customize their learning experiences. Key course areas include data analysis, programming, UX/UI design, and leadership. The flexible credit-based and open learning options have facilitated personalized learning experiences, resulting in a high level of engagement and satisfaction. Participants accessed 596 distinct courses, averaging 3.5 hours of usage time, with peak engagement occurring during semester breaks. Additionally, participants reported outcomes such as increased interest in further education, enhanced technical and collaborative skills, and improved English proficiency among non-native speakers. By integrating edX, Chulalongkorn University has demonstrated how online learning platforms can deliver highquality education, foster a profound “love for learning,” cultivate a lifelong learning disposition, and enhance skill acquisition. This initiative not only strengthens the university's reputation as a leader in innovative education but also provides a scalable model for institutions seeking to leverage online learning for modern educational challenges.
