Transfer Function Model-Based HESS for DTC EV Drive System With Vehicle Dynamics

This paper deals with a method to extend the life span of battery in an Electric Vehicle (EV) by using transfer function model-based feedback control circuit. A hybrid energy storage system for Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor (IPMSM) with vehicle dynamics is considered in this paper. When an electric vehicle undergoes rapid acceleration, the motor requires a surge of current from the energy storage system. If the battery is used as the sole power source, this sudden demand results in heavy current discharge (high c-rate), significantly reducing the battery’s lifespan. The proposed approach integrates a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS), combining a battery pack with a supercapacitor. This system dynamically monitors the rate of current change during high acceleration and deceleration events. By allowing the supercapacitor to supply peak currents during these instances, the method effectively protects the battery from excessive stress, thereby enhancing its durability and overall performance. The developed system is simulated and tested in simulink environment for different driving conditions to prove the benefit of the proposed method. By the results it is observed that the proposed method is more efficient and effective for EV application.
