Simulating Shadows and Solar Irradiance on Green Roofs: Analysis of Geometric Patterns Applying Hexagon Modules Fitted with Vertical Edge Fins

Green roofs are essential for carbon-neutral offset, as they lower energy consumption through provision of thermal insulation on building roofs. In hot arid climates, the longevity of green roof plants is reduced as they experience high-solar irradiance, limited precipitation and extreme temperatures. This study analyzes the way different shape configurations generate shading for plantation modules for green roofs and extend vegetation life expectancy in extreme climates. The software Rhinoceros with Grasshopper and Ladybug plug-in is used to perform parametric simulations on a typology of 1 m diam. hexagon shaped modules fitted with vertical fins in order to measure their ability to generate shadow cover on a 9 x 9 m² horizontal roof surface. Monthly, and annual simulations of shading and solar irradiance are modeled in three instances; i) to measure the interaction of perimeter panels and shading on the interior and exterior of the module surface, ii) measure and rank the shaded surface areas on different full roof array patterns, iii) measure the annual solar irradiance capture by the system with percentage reduction for heat gains on the horizontal surface noted. Future scenarios and conceptual visualizations of the system are represented by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) visualization renderings. Future carbon-neutral design application scenarios and research is discussed.
