Cost Friendly Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair for Disabled People

This paper introduces an innovative hand gesture-controlled wheelchair designed to enhance the independence of individuals with disabilities. Traditional wheelchairs often rely on manual operation or joystick controls, which can be difficult for those with limited hand function. To address this challenge, we developed a wheelchair that utilizes an ADXL335 accelerometer to detect hand gestures, paired with an Arduino microcontroller that interprets these signals and directs DC motors to facilitate movement. Our design emphasizes affordability and sustainability, ensuring that this solution is both accessible and energy-efficient. Early testing has demonstrated the wheelchair’s reliability across different environments and its ability to support users effectively. Looking ahead, we aim to refine the system by enhancing sensor integration and improving gesture recognition for even more precise control, paving the way for greater mobility and autonomy for users.
