Study on the Detection of the Gingival Region Using Oral and Dental Spectral Image Database (ODSI-DB)

Periodontal disease is an infection in the mouth caused by periodontal disease bacteria and is known as a dangerous disease that can eventually cause teeth to fall out. Early detection of periodontal disease is important because there are almost no subjective symptoms in the early stages of periodontal disease. Conventional diagnosis of periodontal disease is mainly done by probing examinations by doctors, and research on automatic diagnosis using images has been delayed. In recent years, automatic diagnosis technology using hyperspectral images has been attracting attention in the medical field, and many research results using the Oral and Dental Spectral Image Database (ODSI-DB) have been published. Recent research results suggest the possibility of detecting the disease by gingival imaging, and we aim to establish a method for extracting gingival sites by combining Mask R-CNN and U-Net. It was clarified that the proposed method can detect marginal gingiva around the tooth almost accurately.
