Enhancing Student Learning with a Customizable Virtual Assistant

A Personalized Virtual Learning Assistant (PVLA) is an intelligent system designed to provide personalization, real- time interaction, adaptive learning, assessment feedback and progress tracking analytics. This study presents the development and implementation of a Personalized Virtual Learning Assistant tailored for students. As educational environments evolve and become more diverse, the need for personalized learning solutions has become increasingly critical. Students have unique learning preferences and paces, requiring tailored support to enhance their understanding and engagement. The proposed system integrates several cutting-edge technologies to provide individualized learning experiences, continuous support, and data-driven insights. Key features of the proposed virtual assistant include: (1) a question generation and answer assessment module, utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) models for creating questions and a deep learning model for evaluating student responses, offering targeted feedback to foster continuous improvement; (2) a hybrid recommendation system employing collaborative filtering techniques (such as Matrix Factorization) combined with content-based filtering methods (like TF-IDF and BERT) to suggest relevant courses, textbooks, and faculty/experts based on individual learning styles and progress rates; (3) a voice activation feature that supports both text and voice interaction, including a wake-up word for hands-free operation, aimed at improving accessibility for visually impaired users. The virtual assistant is structured with a backend hosting all models and a frontend user interface to facilitate interaction. Implemented using the Flask framework, this PVLA system aims to make education more inclusive, engaging, and adaptive to the needs of each student, ultimately enhancing learning outcomes in higher education settings.
