Testing Routing Strategies by Simulating the Mobile IoT Edge/Cloud Continuum

Communication management within smart cities involves collecting the data from different IoT devices into cloud datacentres for analysis. This communication management adds overhead to the time before the data can be analysed and given smart cities have limited network resources, it is important to use these network resources as efficiently as possible to minimize this communication management overhead (CMO). In this paper we provide an experimental simulation testbed to help analyse different scheduling and routing algorithms for use within smart cities to help best manage the network resources and minimise network delay and the overall CMO. Using this testbed, we compare two routing algorithms (one novel) in combination with a novel packet limiting algorithm, comparing how they impacted the network delay and the CMO. Choosing the optimal routing algorithm in combination with our novel packet limiting algorithm we were able to reduce the CMO by up to 10%.
