Smart Streetlight by Using Smart Meter Network

In Bangkok metropolitan area of Thailand, The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), a utility who supplied electricity for people and streetlight system. MEA also controls (on/off), monitor and maintenance the streetlight more than 500,000 luminaries in the metropolitan area. Smart meters were provided to measure energy of streetlight system and can controlled (on/off). An application added on this project is data analytic to detect lamp failures. MEA had a pilot project to measure energy and control on/off the streetlight around 3,000 luminaires by using 100 smart meters. The smart meters were programmed the schedule command before installation to make sure that they can operate even communication failure. Using data from smart meters that measured energy (kWh) every 15 minutes will be a solution to make the utility know which meter had some lamps failed. Energy reduced significantly (may more than 30 %) will show that may have something occur in this circuit such as lamps fail, power line broken, the local administer changed conventional technology of lamp to be LEDs. This project used NB-IoT to communicate between smart meters and Head End System (HES) installed in MEA cloud. Cost of the streetlight control device was reduced. Faster maintenance service is a main benefit for people in the city to be a smart city soon.
