DVB-S Based Passive Radar as Single Node of Low-Cost Sensor Network for Smart City Protection

This work presents de suitability of passive radar technology to be considered as a single node of a low-cost sensor network for improving the security of a smart city. Passive radar systems ensure electromagnetic compatibility and the exploitation of DVB-S (Digital Video Broadcast - Satellite) allows a permanent availability that leads to a reliable detection performance. Bistatic Radar Cross Sections (BRCSs) of drones are estimated in Ku-band for coverage studies, and monitoring results of using a passive radar demonstrator in Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping using Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS) confirm the capability of the proposed solution to supplement public safety and critical infrastructure protection.
